A 24-year-old woman was shot in her car at a stoplight in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. Her cellphone may have stopped the bullet from killing her.

The victim was stopped in the 7100-block of South Wentworth Avenue just before 11:15 p.m. Monday. Her father said she had just finished her shift at FedEx and was picking up her boyfriend.

Police said that’s when someone got out of another car, ran up to her and opened fire. Her father said someone was trying to rob her. The white car veered off the road and onto a grassy lot. The driver’s side window was shot out and there is a bullet hole in the side of the vehicle. The woman was shot several times in the upper part of her body. Her father said she was on the phone when she was shot. He said the phone may have stopped the bullets from entering her head.

She was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she is listed in serious condition. Her father said she has shrapnel in her head and will need plastic surgery, but is expected to be OK.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said there are surveillance cameras at a nearby store that may have recorded the shooting.

“I mean you driving down the street and someone run up and discharge a weapon in the car. You know it’s getting sort of scary to just be driving down the street,” Holmes said.

Investigators are looking into what caused the shooting. Police did not give a description of the suspect or the suspect’s vehicle. No one is in custody.
