South Side natives Anthony and Anton Downing have been flipping houses in Chicago for extra income for years. Now they’re trying to parlay their side hustle into a TV gig.

The 37-year-old twin brothers filmed a house-flipping pilot last year that they are hoping is picked up to series. The “Double Down” episode, which premiered last month on the DIY Network, is scheduled to re-air at noon Friday on HGTV. The pilot focuses on a renovation of a midcentury house in the 9100 block of South Cregier Avenue in the Calumet Heights community.

“We noticed that just flipping one house on one block improved that block. It took one vacant property or boarded-up property off that block to make the whole neighborhood better,” said Anthony Downing, a Chicago firefighter who lives in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

The brothers said they are focused on fixing up properties in the Chatham, Burnside, South Shore and Bronzeville neighborhoods. They would also like to expand to the West Side.

Anton Downing, a suburban Dolton firefighter who lives in the South Shore neighborhood, said the idea to film a show came from a friend who attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with them. The pal saw their work while looking for a property to shoot a horror film. The brothers said they hooked up with the Michael Group, a Chicago multimedia and video production company.

The Downings said they got positive feedback from social media users on the pilot when it premiered last month and they need more people to tune in Friday. If “Double Down” is picked up to series, it would not be the only Chicago home renovation show on TV. “Windy City Rehab,” which follows Alison Victoria Gramenos as she flips North Side homes, premiered on HGTV this month.

“Big City Charm” — which would have trailed Southern California couple Mark and Liz Perez as they flipped Chicago homes — was supposed to premiere last year on HGTV, but the series was not picked up.

Anthony Downing said there’s room for everyone.

“That show is showcasing the North Side and higher-end properties,” he said about “Windy City Rehab.” “We’re on the South Side, and we also want to showcase the West Side, middle-class, affordable houses, starter homes for families. So it’s really just apples and oranges.”

Said Anton Downing: “We want (viewers) to know that we’re just like them. We want them to see our show from an aspirational aspect. If the twins can do it, they can do it.”
