Chicago police investigators have launched a death investigation after the body of a newborn baby was found on the Northwest Side Saturday morning, officials said.

The boy’s body was discovered in a plastic shopping bag in a gangway between two buildings on the 2700 block of North Hamlin Avenue, Chicago police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney said.

A passerby found the baby in the bag at 8:30 a.m. and alerted police, Sweeney said.

The body was found with an umbilical cord still connected, as well as a placenta, a police source said.

An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the manner and cause of death, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
