Chicago Man Arrested After Shaking A Baby So Hard She Required Surgery

Richard Martin

The caretaker of a 14-month-old girl shook her so forcefully she suffered brain damage and required surgery, according to police.

Richard Martin, 22, of the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue, has been charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, police said.  He is expected to appear in court today.

Martin told police he was alone in his bedroom with the baby on Monday and was trying to wake her up after she’d been crying, according to a police report. Martin told officers the baby stopped crying and “tensed up” after he had been “fake dropping’’ her, the report said.

The baby’s mother entered the room and found the child unresponsive, so she began CPR. The child was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital for immediate brain surgery after suffering bleeding on the brain and swelling, the police report said.

Police were notified when someone at Holy Cross Hospital called to report a case of child abuse.
