Because a glitch at currency exchanges Tuesday in Chicago prevented lines of last-minute customers from buying city vehicle stickers, the deadline was extended for one day.

Without that extension, city workers would have started ticketing cars without valid stickers at midnight Tuesday.

The late announcement by City Clerk Susana Mendoza pushed the deadline back to 11:59 p.m. Wednesday to allow more time to sort out the mess.

If you miss Wednesday night’s deadline, you’ll face a $200 fine and a $60 late fee when you buy a new sticker.

Mendoza tweeted late Tuesday: “Late fees & enforcement are being waived for 1 add day due to issues at our currency exchanges tonight. We will share more info w you asap.”

Another tweet read: “Grace period ends 7-16 @ 11:59pm.” And yet another: “Vehicle sticker customers have one more day to buy w/o late fees & tickets. Ty for yr patience.”

Anyone visiting the city clerk’s website Tuesday night for the latest information would be out of luck — the update had not been posted by 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.

A spokesman for Mendoza could not be reached late Tuesday.
