The right-wing blogosphere is up in arms over something Obama said during a Halloween speech, and Bristol Palin is leading the charge. So should it be any surprise that they’re cherrypicking?
Bristol Palin has gotten all worked up again over something that President Obama said during a speech on Halloween.
According to Palin, Obama attacked stay at home moms while making a speech about the economy in Rhode Island. She read Obama’s remarks about stay-at-home moms as a “poor choice of words” that condemned “someone else’s perfectly good life choice.” So what exactly did Obama say?
He said this:
Sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. And that’s not a choice we want Americans to make.
Palin believes that Obama is attacking stay at home mothers:
When you take someone else’s perfectly good life choice and say they shouldn’t do that because they make less money.
It’s not like having their mom at homehurts kids. All Obama said is they don’t make as much when they stay home. So no mother should ever choose to do that?
Maybe she thinks her kids are worth the sacrifice! Are you going to tell her that’s the wrong choice?
As a single mom, I have to work. In fact, I drive to Anchorage every day and clock in and out – just to make sure I have a steady income to put bread on the table for my son. However, I don’t think that we should look down on moms who have the option of staying home!
And she brought in some other right-wing quotes, including one particular gentleman went on a spectacular right-wing rant:
Don’t fall for this [crap]. Two things they want, control and money. Both parents working means tax revenue, kids in state pre-K is control.
It is a lie. It is the biggest lie told to children & immature adults that you can have everything without sacrifice. Biggest lie ever told.
Most people lap up these promises, are perpetually unhappy because reality strikes back, and then blame others for their imperfect lives.
Do you really want the state making choices for you? Do you really want them creating a one size fits all world?
The more you rely on the government, the more it owns you.
And who is this “government,” kemosabe? The post office? The road commission? The water department downtown? Your friendly neighborhood park ranger? Some nebulous entity like the EPA or FCC, who don’t even have 20,000 federal employees between them?
I get the feeling that if he knew the extent to which he relies on the government every day, his brain would break. After all, he posted that on the Internet, which originated as a government-funded project that privatization is now threatening.
Here’s the part that Palin is so upset about, in context:
And too often, parents have no choice but to put their kids in cheaper daycare that maybe doesn’t have the kinds of programming that makes a big difference in a child’s development. And sometimes there may just not be any slots, or the best programs may be too far away. And sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. And that’s not a choice we want Americans to make.
Obama was making the remarks regarding daycare, not stay at home moms. He noted that some people stay at home, not because they want to, but because there’s no good, affordable daycare for their kids and, as a result, their, income is grossly effected. Obama is merely noting that nobody should be forced to stay at home because they can’t find decent daycare for their children. Nobody should be forced to make that choice.
But the wingnut Obama Derangement Syndrome kicks in, and next thing we know, they’ve got themselves all worked up in a lather, raving that Obama hates stay at home moms. At this point, you can almost set your clock by it.
