HIV is a serious and growing problem, but media doesn’t talk about it very much. One rapper is seeking to change that, as he has just announced on Facebook that he’s been HIV positive for the last several years.
Mykki Blanco says that HIV is one of the battles he’s facing and says that it’s been difficult.
“I’ve been HIV Positive since 2011, my entire career,” he wrote Friday. “(Expletive) stigma and hiding in the dark, this is my real life.”
He says that he’s been going on world tours and that he is healthy, despite his condition.
“It’s time to actually be as punk as I say I am,” said Blanco.
Thousands of fans supported Blanco, giving him likes and comments. He says that his remarks may make it tougher for him to succeed in the music industry.
“The music industry ain’t gonna like I admitted this so if a curator could help me move more into the art world that would be awesome,” he wrote.
Other rappers have been hit with the virus in the past, but few have told the public about their condition. The rapper Eazy-E died of AIDS 20 years ago, but his condition went undiagnosed for a very long period of time.
Tell us what you think. Is his act one of courage or one that should invoke a negative reaction?
By the way – get tested, not just for HIV, but for all the other diseases that are going around. It’s a jungle out there.
