Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Banned From Virginia Tech University Campus For 10 Years

EarHustle411 has posted stories about fraternities and sororities, the good, the bad and the ugly and unfortunately the latest to come down the greek organization pipeline is the as bad as it gets.   The powers that be at the Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc. National Headquarters  has taken a measure that is by far the harshest punishment we’ve ever seen.  Interestingly enough members of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon was captured on video spewing racial slurs while riding on a chartered bus, back in October a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter in San Diego, CA sent a message to a fellow female student requesting her to send a photo of her topless for a “campaign” he referred to as “Rush Boobs”.   Either way, the punishment for Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity who has been consistently keeping the media busy did not sustain the punishment anywhere near what the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated received at the behest of their own leadership.

The organization’s national headquarters located in Baltimore, MD handed harshest punishment against the Black Greek Lettered Organization that is sure to send shock waves through the greek community.  Theta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., who was the university’s first black greek organization in the campus has been banned from the Virginia Tech campus for 10 years due to a hazing incident where a pledge member of the fraternity claimed to have been blindfolded and beaten over several days.  The pledge had been interviewed by investigators with the fraternity about the hazing claims where he stated to have been hospitalized as a direct result of he beating he received over 5 days in January.

Virginia Tech’s Vice President of Student Affairs stated via email “Virginia Tech takes every allegation of hazing seriously and is fully committed to a student life culture that promotes learning and well-being, and “As such, hazing of any kind is not tolerated.”  Alpha Phi Alpha has been removed from the university’s student organization page on the school’s website.

As unfortunate as this incident is and the negative light that is shone upon the greek organizations as a whole even if they are not involved in hazing allegations, EarHustle411 once again asks the question of who in their right mind would allow themselves to be physically or even mentally abused just to be part of an organization?  We can’t place all the blame on the organizations and EarHustle411 is in no way saying the pledge doesn’t have a valid claim however one has to ponder the mindset of the people who are seeking “inclusion” into any organization whether greek or not.

The leadership within the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are sending a clear message that hazing in any form will not be tolerated, so this decade long punishment is bound to be a wake up call to those who are current members and those who are seeking to become members.  EarHustle411 will continue to monitor this story and post updates as they emerge.
