“It hurt” to see footage of Freddie Gray’s ultimately fatal arrest, and so Allen Bullock, who said that he knew the 25-year-old, took to the streets of Baltimore to join the protests after Gray’s death, The Guardian reports. “It wasn’t that he died; it was how he died,” Bullock, joined by family members and his attorney, J. Wyndal Gordon, told reporters on Tuesday, according to the news site.

Bullock, 18, who works in maintenance through Baltimore City’s YouthWorks, became national news after his family spotted him in news footage bashing a police car with a traffic cone and urged him to take responsibility for his actions and turn himself in. He did and was subsequently locked up and given bail of $500,000, more than that of any of the officers charged in Gray’s death.

Bullock remained in a Baltimore jail for 10 days after his arrest in late April before his bail was posted anonymously last Thursday through a bondsman. According to The Guardian, it seems that Bullock, his family and Gordon don’t know who posted the $50,000 minimum for the teen to make bail, although there were some crowdfunding efforts to raise money.

Gordon said that the bail amount was “ransom” and that Bullock, who was born and raised in Baltimore, was never a flight risk justifying the size of his bail.

The teen told reporters that he still backs the protests, but he also said that “not all police” are responsible for Gray’s death.
