In light of all the injustices that the black community has had to endure over the past few years, the black community has begged for black celebrities and public figures to take a stand and speak out against these tragedies. Some celebrities have made a stand by using social media and news outlets like CNN to sound off.

Unlike these outspoken celebrities who rose to their fans outcries, there are some black celebrities who prefer to work behind the scenes and let their actions speak for themselves. Nelly, for example, is one such celebrity. He rose to the occasion and heeded the cries of his fans. He visited Ferguson and spoke with protesters. Nelly also created a scholarship in Michael Brown’s name in an effort to not only help his memory live on, but also to inspire students to be the change they wish to see within their community.

“I try to do it through education because that’s the only way we’re going to get it. The only way we’re going to get this is to elevate,” Nelly explained in an interview with Hello Beautiful shortly after the anniversary of Ferguson on August 9, 2015. “We have to get the kids to go out of these communities. Graduate. Get the knowledge. Come back to the community, and then they can run it because they understand the people and understand the severity of the situation.”

The Michael Brown scholarship isn’t the first act of altruism Nelly has done for education. Every year for the past 10 years, Nelly has sent two students to college on scholarships. Critics have publicly criticized the rapper for his lack of vocal support in Ferguson, however, Nelly insists that sometimes it is better to act quietly.

“It’s not about the hoo-ha,” he says. “It’s about the silent assassins. It’s the ones that move behind the scenes that get things done. The guy that’s screaming on television, he’s the diversion. I’m not a diversion. I’m going to get it done.”

Nelly isn’t the only celebrity to act behind the scenes. J.Cole stopped his tour in order to attend the graduation of a female fan when she was accepted into a four-year university. He even said he would pay her tuition for the school. This past August, an athlete from Compton took to Instagram to show that Tyrese Gibson invested $50,000 in his future by sending him to Morehouse College. LeBron James announced a new mentorship program that would help 1,000 kids from Akron, Ohio, to go college if they successfully complete his six-year program.

In light of the “Black Lives Matter” protests, more influential Black celebrities are stepping up and giving children within the black community a chance to be successful.
