I wish my children would do something like this to me. This man must really have a serious gambling problem to leave his mother in the hot car while he gets his gamble on, never mind that she’s 98. I hope he gets the book for elderly abuse, this is a shame.
Authorities say a man is facing charges after leaving his 98-year-old mother–who is confined to a wheelchair– in a hot car outside a Maryland casino for nearly five hours.
Police say it happened Monday outside the Maryland Live! Casino around 6:30 p.m. Officers were called to the parking garage after a concerned citizen spotted the elderly woman inside a red Ford pickup truck and called 911.
An investigation revealed that the woman and her son, 67-year-old Dwight McGinnis of Raleigh, North Carolina, arrived inside the parking garage sometime before 1:42 p.m. McGinnis parked and went inside the casino, leaving his mother in the truck. According to Anne Arundel County police, the man did not leave the casino until 6:17 p.m., leaving his mother alone in the truck for almost five hours.
Investigators say the air temperature at the time the woman was found was 81 degrees, and she was inside the vehicle with one window only partially open. There was an empty soda can inside, but there was no other evidence of any food or drink being left for the woman.
When officers first arrived, they say the woman seemed confused, but as they continued talking to her, she became more coherent and was eventually able to help them locate her son. They were able to reach McGinnis on his cell phone at about 7:15 p.m., and he returned to the vehicle minutes later. He was then arrested.
Police way the woman was not injured. McGinnis is charged with vulnerable adult neglect, and he was also served with an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for driving with a suspended license.
