3-Year-Old Toddler Shot In Head On West Side Of Chicago

3-year-old boy was shot Friday night in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. inside of a residence on the 4300 block of West Monroe Street, said Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala. The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police said the boy was in a closet with at least one other child and playing with the gun when it discharged, hitting the boy in the head and leaving him in critical condition.

Police said the boy’s father took the gun, the remaining rounds and fled the scene. Police are looking to question him.

Police at the scene said children were gathered inside the home when the shooting occurred though they’re still investigating whether the shooting was accidental. It was also unclear whether the boy’s mother was at the home.

Tammy McNeal, who identified herself as a chaplain with the nearby New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, said she was driving through the neighborhood to recruit women to join a Bible study group.

People began running from near the scene, she said.

“And then I heard screams saying somebody’s been shot,” she said.

McNeal said she identified herself as a religious worker, and that officers allowed her to “pray for the baby” before cordoning the block with crime scene tape

The young victim was brought from the house in a small stretcher, she said. She stretched her hands about two feet apart, to show the victim’s size.

“He was not even long enough to fill the stretcher,” McNeal said. “His body was so small. He was so tiny. Everybody was just like ‘wow’. It was just sad.”
