MILWAUKEE —Three sisters have been charged with tax fraud after allegedly filing more than $200,000 worth of false tax returns.

Angela Staten, her sisters, Tawanda and Sharon Staten, and boyfriend Anthony Coleman, were charged with multiple counts of fraud after the State of Wisconsin claims they used false tax returns and fraudulent tax credits between 2010 and 2012.

Court documents said the three are believed to have defrauded the state out of $234,390.

The criminal complaint said the trio submitted fictitious W-2 forms as well as fake rent payment certificates in order to claim false homestead credits.

The prosecution said the three may have also defrauded the United States Treasury out of hundreds of thousands of dollars through false federal tax returns.

Angela Staten told police that her boyfriend provided her with names of inmates at Fox Lake Correctional Institute, which she then used to file the fraudulent returns in their names.

Prosecutors believe more than 2,000 fraudulent tax returns and homestead credits were filed by the sisters.

“We’re concerned about the repercussions to people years down the line because they’re going to have to go back, and this is going to have to be cleaned up,” Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said.

Angela Staten faces 40 counts in the indictment. Tawanda Staten faces 28 counts and Sharon Staten faces 23 counts of fraud.
