Three men were critically wounded in a shooting near a Gold Coast neighborhood hotel early Sunday.
A 25-year-old was standing outside the W Chicago-Lakeshore hotel in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive about 2:15 a.m. when someone got out of a dark-colored SUV nearby and opened fire, according to Chicago Police. The shooter then jumped back into the SUV, which sped away westbound.
The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
A 32-year-old shot in the head and a 30-year-old shot in the left side of the abdomen later showed up at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. They were both listed as critical.
Police said it was unclear if two older men were shot inside or outside the hotel as the victims — all documented gang members — were not cooperating with investigators.
Sam and Sally Fatigato, who are staying at the W hotel, slept through the shooting, they told the Chicago Sun-Times.
They awoke Sunday morning to find multiple text messages from friends checking on their safety. But their thoughts immediately turned to their 30-year-old son who dropped them off at the hotel Saturday night.
“He wasn’t around when the shootings happened, thankfully,” said Sam Fatigato, who is in town from Austin, Texas, to see the Bears play, and, later Sunday, the Blackhawks.
“We moved to Texas in 2000, and it’s sad to see your home city in the papers every day with shootings,” he said. “It’s just a shame because Chicago is a great city, if it just could get its act together on this . . . there’s too many guns on the street.”
