The upcoming New year means a long list of new laws in the state of Illinois, with 220 of them approved by lawmakers and Governor Pat Quinn.

The speed limit on tollways and interstates will increase to 70 miles per hour for vehicles and 60 miles per hour for semi-trucks.

The infamous ticket quota system for police is gone. Drivers who are caught speeding or get pulled over for other minor offenses will now get to keep their license. Instead, they can sign a paper promising the ticket will be paid or the person ticketed will show up in court.

The popular e-cigarettes must now be kept behind store counters and out of reach from children, and the vapor refills must come in child-proof packaging.

Children who suffer from seizures can now qualify for a liquid form of medical marijuana.

As a reminder for the upcoming boating season, a new law will require a boat towing someone, on a tube for example, to display an orange flag for others to see. The law also allows police to seize the boat of a drunk driver on the water.

In a big step in combatting cyber bulling, school administrators can discipline students who bully their peers on personal devices, even if it’s not on school grounds.

The new laws, of course, go into effect Jan. 1, 2015.
