2 Men Killed On The Steps Of A South Austin Neighborhood Church

What in the world kind of place do we live in when 2 men can be murdered on the steps of a spiritual institution.  The very same one where racist behavior is accepted but standing up for the rights of others can get one  blackballed in the sports industry.  Either way this world has gone to hell with gasoline underpants on!!

The service had just started.

Two men were walking up the steps to Friendship Baptist Church in South Austin Sunday morning, about 11:15 a.m. One of the men was accompanied by his three sons, said Pastor Reginald Bachus.

“They were on their way up the steps to the church and two gentlemen ran up from Jackson (Boulevard) and basically unloaded on them,” Bachus said.

Detectives scanned the scene of the more than dozen yellow evidence markers that sat on the sidewalk and stairs leading up to doors of the church. A Chicago White Sox hat, a white garment, a notepad and a blood stain painted a scene of pandemonium after two gunman opened fire outside the place of worship.

A 46-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 34-year-old man also was shot multiple times and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Their names have not yet been released.

Police and church members have said an usher, who was walking into the church with his three children, was among the two men killed.

The sound of people singing in the church turned into a loud commotion as church members who heard the gunshots hit the deck.

“It’s just hard for me to believe that something like this could happen on a Sunday morning,” Bachus said. “Two young men on their way to church … I think that’s the hardest part for me to grasp.”

Police were called to the 200 block of South Laramie Avenue about 11:20 a.m., police said; the Friendship Baptist Church is at 5200 West Jackson Boulevard in South Austin.

The gunmen fled in a silver or gray SUV headed south, officials said. Deputy Chief Al Nagode said the Chicago Police Department is dedicated to finding and arresting those responsible.

“The victims were going to church, two individuals came up and fired their weapons, striking the individuals,” Nagode told reporters at an unrelated news conference Sunday.

“We are extremely close with our faith-based organizations over there,” said Nagode. “It certainly is a troubled area and we dedicate a tremendous amount of resources to it … in an attempt to help the community out in any way we can.”

Bachus said there will likely be a vigil at the church on Monday.
