Are You In The Wrong Field? A Bart Janitor Earned $270K In Pay & Overtime

A BART janitor was paid $162,000 in overtime last year, almost three times his base salary, according to public pay data.

Liang Zhao Zhang also received nearly $15,000 in other pay to gross nearly $235,000, records show. Benefits brought his total cost of employment to the rail agency to more than $270,000.

And records show this isn’t the first time he raked in six-figure compensation at BART. The same employee received a combined $682,000 in pay and benefits over the last three years.

The eye-popping figures are featured in a new report from the non-profit Transparent California which released records showing the pay of special district workers across the state Tuesday morning.

“It would be great if all janitors were paid $200,000,” said Transparent California Research Director Robert Fellner. “But I seriously doubt BART riders — who must pay for this excess — are ever afforded that opportunity.”

Another maintenance worker at the Port of Oakland topped $200,000 in pay and benefits last year, data showed.

The highest paid special district worker in the state was Nancy Farber, CEO of Fremont’s Washington Health Care District, who took home $931,839 in pay and benefits, records show.
