A Schuylkill County teenage mother is accused of critically injuring her newborn son by throwing the baby against a wall.

Police were called around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of North 12th Street in Pottsville for the report of a person down.

Arriving officers found 18-year-old Larisa Zimmerman holding her two-month-old baby boy, who was unconscious.

The EMTs noticed apparent bruising to the baby’s left forearm and left side of his forehead.

The baby was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, Lehigh County in critical condition.

Police said medical testing showed the newborn had evidence of new and old fractures, a subdural hematoma, and several bruises.

During a police interview, Zimmerman told officers she had become ‘frustrated’ with her child and she had thrown him against a wall of her apartment during the early morning hours Tuesday.

Police say the back of the baby’s head hit the wall, he fell to the floor and then ‘went limp and made strange noises’ causing her to call 911.

Physicians at Lehigh Valley Hospital told police the baby’s injuries were consistent with those that would occur from the actions Zimmerman described to police.

Zimmerman was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

She was arraigned and taken to the Schuylkill County Prison after being unable to post $50,000 cash bail.
