It’s a crying shame that our children are not free to express themselves without adults being adults and addressing the children in a dignified manner to discuss any concerns with their artful expression.   A young, talented black student choreographer was made to defend herself and her well thought-out dance routine as some of her white teachers were supposedly offended by the routine that was created in reference to police brutality as well as lynchings.  While many people who have heard the controversial song Strange Fruit by Nina Simone, it always seems to drudge up negative conversation as if what she is singing about is not a big deal.  The fact of the matter is whites want to brush off the horrible acts of racist behavior and hate as if it’s no big deal.

How can one be offended by something that people in their very own race actually did?  The Jim Crow era was and is still a real thing, the police brutalize and kill blacks and are hiding behind the badge to justify their actions.  In today’s society the lynchings against blacks are being carried out by the bullets of law enforcement and with the pounding of the wooden gavel in the courtroom.

History cannot and will not be erased nor should the very race of people who inflicted such pains upon blacks be offended by the upfront and bold reminder that blacks were the object of many a “strange fruit” hanging from trees.

A Black student choreographer receives backlash from the white teachers offended by the ballet dance tackling police brutality.
The controversial ballet dance titled “Four Score and Seven Years Ago”, which was performed at Columbia High School was intended to raise awareness of slavery, racism and police brutality. It was choreographed to the Nina Simone song, “Strange Fruit.”

The dance was also accompanied by the statements concerning Black experiences.

The performance raised a lot of controversy among white school teachers who directed their aggression towards Kendi Whitaker, who was the choreographer of the dance and the author of the idea.

The reaction to the ballet dance forced  Kendi Whitaker, to address the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education Thursday. And the speech she made was just gorgeous.

It’s no surprise that white people suddenly start feeling uncomfortable when they have to face the reality they are a part of but the sooner they understand they are partners in crime with the system they support the better.
