Friday, Governor Bobby Jindal joined Louisiana State Police in unveiling the results of a two month operation that landed over 1,000 people under arrest. “Operation Carpe Diem” was a seven week initiative involving almost 200 state troopers. It’s mission was to crack down on illegal weapons, drugs, fugitives, and sex crimes. More than $6.5 million in illegal drugs and 100 illegal weapons were seized during the mission.

Carpe Diem means “To Seize the Day”. But for Louisiana State Police, it also means a two month initiative to crack down on crime within the state. “The troopers focused on cracking down on sex crimes, on crimes related to drugs, illegal weapons and fugitives”, says Governor Bobby Jindal at Louisiana State Police Headquarters in Baton Rouge. The operation lead to 1,025 arrests…and to put that into perspective, that’s almost equal to the entire population of Arnaudville.

One of the arrests not made, however, was a main point of today’s conference. Darneesha Martin is the Lafayette woman still wanted for child trafficking. Out of the three juveniles rescued during Carpe Diem, two were in Martin’s possession. “They trusted her. She lured them in off the streets as runaways and said “I’m going to take care of y’all, but you’re going to have to do a little bit of work for me in the meantime”, says Colonel Michael Edmonson with state police.

More than $6.5 million dollars in illegal drugs and over 100 illegal weapons were seized during the two month operation. And while it has proved successful, state police say they know that keeping Louisiana safe is a 24 hour job. “This should be a warning to all those criminals out there. Anybody who’s thinking about doing harm to an innocent child or innocent family. Anybody that’s thinking about committing a crime in Louisiana. We will catch you, we will hunt you down and we will bring you to justice”, says Jindal
