A two-year-old St Louis girl has been beaten to death by her stepfather because she stole a piece of cake, police have said.
Deonte Evans, 23, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jabria Phillips. Authorities said Evans was punishing the girl after she climbed onto a counter to grab cake.
She died on Tuesday of blunt force trauma and had injuries to a number of organs. Evans is also charged with child abuse and armed criminal action. The girl’s mother, 23-year-old Shanika Evan, has been charged with first-degree child endangerment. Court documents say she did not inform medical personnel that her husband hit the child until after the girl was taken to hospital two days after the beating. She had stopped eating, vomited and was so lethargic she could not get out of bed, KMOX TV reported.
The St Louis Post-Dispatch reported that an autopsy showed the child had rib injuries that appeared to be from a previous incident.
