Sherri Shepherd’s Surrogate Is Being Forced to Pay Child Support

Sherri Shepherd’s Surrogate IsBeing Forced to Pay Child Support

Jessica Bartholomew, the surrogate for Sherri Shepherd and Shepherd’s estranged husband, Lamar Sally, is speaking out. In an interview with Inside Edition, Bartholomew discussed her disappointment with the former talk show host because she’s decided not to be part of Lamar Jr.’s life.

“I just don’t understand how she can act like this baby is nonexistent. It just blows my mind,” Bartholomew told Inside Edition Thursday night.

Bartholomew, 23, carried the baby, who was conceived using Sally’s sperm and another woman’s egg. Bartholomew said she had no clue that the couple were having issues until she heard about the split. According to Inside Edition, Bartholomew said that on Sept. 12, 2013, she, along with Sally and Shepherd, signed a 23-page contract in which Shepherd was called the “intended mother.” Bartholomew said she was paid $25,000.

“She would call up and check on me during the pregnancy in the beginning,” Bartholomew said of Shepherd, according to an Inside Edition press release regarding the interview. “At the 20-week appointment, she seemed very excited. She was going to see the baby for the first time. … I didn’t see any warning signs right away.”

The baby was born Aug. 5, and Shepherd has not had any contact with him. And now Bartholomew is the one being held liable for child support.

Because Bartholomew’s name is on the birth certificate, and Sally has full custody of the baby and has applied for Medicaid in California, the state is coming after her for money.

“I am now listed as a noncustodial parent in California. I have a child support case coming against me now,” Bartholomew said, according to the press release.

In addition to being held financially responsible, Bartholomew said she is angry that Shepherd has neglected the contract they had. “I am angry with Sherri because she never once contacted me to tell me what was happening. It was kind of like I was left out in the cold,” she told Inside Edition.

Shepherd and Sally’s divorce has not yet been finalized. Most recently, Sally threatened to sue Shepherd, charging that she abandoned the baby. Shepherd offered Sally $150,000, but Sally figured out that the sum amounted to only about $694 a month over 18 years. Sally believes that a court will grant him more money.

hen Inside Edition asked Bartholomew what she would like to see happen, she stated, “I would like to see her sign the birth certificate and take responsibility for L.J. because that’s what she signed up to do and that is the right thing to do.”

Shepherd seems to be of the mindset, “Not my egg, not my baby.”
