Parents Leave 8-Year Old Home Alone With Loaded Gun & He Accidentally Shoots Himself Dead

An 8-year-old boy shot and killed himself in a southwest valley home Saturday after police say he was left alone with his younger sister.

Police were called to the 9100 block of Wine Cellar Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Metro Lt. James Weiskopf of the special victims section told News 3 detectives are trying to determine if this was an accident and how the boy got a hold of the gun.

Neighbors watched as police rushed in and taped off the scene near Pebble and El Capitan.

“Heartbreak — that’s probably the worst thing any parent could ever imagine is losing your child like something to that —I’d never wish that upon anybody,” one neighbor told News 3.

Residents said the victim was well known around the neighborhood — often seen skateboarding with a group of kids.

However, many worry this could have been prevented. One neighbor told News 3 there was an incident with a gun and the neighborhood kids just last week.

“They were playing with a gun, and shot it, and all of them kind of went running, so we don’t know where the gun came from. It could have been the parents it could have been introduced by another kid — nobody really knows that’s the sad part,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Child Protective Service as well as the Clark County Coroner are investigating the circumstances of the child’s death.

It is unknown whether the parents will face any charges.
