No Rent For 9 Months..You’re Evicted!! Wheaton, IL DMV Set To Close On March 24, 2016

You’re evicted.

That’s the message from a landlord to the broke state of Illinois — kicking out a Secretary of State’s office because the rent is way overdue.

CBS 2’s Sandra Torres reports it’s a sign of the times.

The Wheaton “express driver’s service” facility is definitely one that handles a lot of traffic: about 9,000 transactions a month. For those who depend on it, the closing of it is a major inconvenience.

The doors will close March 24.

“The landlord decided not to renew the lease,” says David Druker, spokesman with the secretary of state’s office.

He says 138 facilities are two to three months behind on rent. A supplemental appropriation lawmakers passed in December has helped the office catch up with rent payments, he adds.

According to the landlord in Wheaton, though, the state hasn’t paid its rent in nine months.

Once closed, the nine employees at the facility will be transferred to other locations, and drivers will have to go to other so-called DMV’s in DuPage County.

The state of Illinois is operating without a budget, due to a stalemate between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders who control the General Assembly.

One the location closes next Thursday, customers can go to offices in Lombard, Aurora or Naperville. For more information, go to cyberdriveillinois.com.
