Murdered Student Hadiya Pendleton To Have South Side Park Named In Her Honor

A South Side park will be expanded and renamed in honor of slain teenager Hadiya Pendleton.

According to park district officials, the expansion of Buckthorn Park at 44th & Calumet will cost $1.9 million dollars.

Pendleton was shot and killed less than a mile from that park in January 2013,  just a week after performing at President Obama’s inauguration with her high school band.  She was 15-years-old.

The shooting was part of an ongoing gang war in the neighborhood.

Hadiya’s mother,  Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton,  called the renaming of the park “absolutely awesome.”
