A Baker mother says she saw her son perish in a drive-by shooting after returning home from an outing with their entire family. Now she and her husband will never be the same again after two of their children were shot Saturday night. One of the children, 7-year-old son Terrez Coleman, suffered fatal injuries. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating, and are asking for help from anyone who may have information on this incident. Our 9News crew was on the scene of the shooting that took place in the 8900 block of Prescott Road just after 11:00 pm Saturday night.

Reports say the family of five was traveling down Prescott Rd. when they passed a dark-colored vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. They heard a “pop” sound as the cars passed each other, believing a tire had blown out. But when the parents checked on their children, they saw blood and realized that two of the children in the backseat had been shot. One of the children, an 11-year-old girl, was grazed and taken to a local hospital for treatment. But Terrez  suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family immediately drove to the District 6 fire station at the intersection of Prescott Rd. and Lanier Dr. and banged on the door to get the attention of firefighters, witnesses said. Firefighters attempted to render first aid and contacted law enforcement.

An emotional Coleman family spoke with our news crew, sitting together, recalling the tragic events of the night.

“When a car passed us, we heard a loud noise, and we cut the inside light on. We saw blood on their clothes, and I saw my son go down,” said mother, Felicia Coleman. “We went down Prescott a little bit more and we saw the fire station. We were bamming the door because we saw an ambulance there. We were hoping they could help us, but… it was too late.”
Family members told our 9News crew that little Terrez, his mother, father, and his two 11-year-old twin sisters were heading home to Baker after a full day of family outings, which included a family reunion in Clinton and a visit to a stable to visit Terrez’s new gift of his very own horse. On the way home, the Colemans were traveling down Prescott Rd., between Joor Rd. and Lanier Dr. That is when another vehicle passed them and changed their lives forever.

Felicia Coleman is still struggling to understand why this happened.

“My thought is how can somebody be that cruel? He was only seven years old. He was innocent,” she said.

Investigators say they have not determined a motive for the incident, but so far, it appears to have been a random shooting.  EBRSO spokesperson Casey Hicks says they are looking for any information that will help this family heal.

“Finding the suspect and bringing that person to justice is going to be a small step forward for that family to begin healing. And as a community, we’re going to help them take further steps,” said Hicks.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
