Peer pressure must be a heck of a thing because these so-called “challenges” are popping up everywhere and it’s so unfortunate that it takes someone to lose their life to bring some kind of notice to this type of behavior.  A teenage boy has died as a result of the challenge when he performed the challenge alone.

CARVER COUNTY, Minn. – A 16-year-old Minnesota boy has lost his life after taking part in what’s known as the “Cold Water Challenge.”

Authorities say the victim, identified as Davis Colley, went swimming at Eagle Lake in Baylor Park Friday night by himself, and he drowned.

Friends said Colley texted his girlfriend earlier in the evening to say he was going to jump into the lake near Norwood Young America.

Carver County deputies received a report of a teen who went underwater and never returned to the surface around 7:30 p.m. Authorities recovered the body of the teen around 11:00 p.m. The teen was alone at the time he jumped into the icy water.

The challenge has been gaining momentum on social media. It is intended to raise money for cancer charities, but law enforcement officials have been warning people of the possible dangers jumping into a cold body of water.

Officials say it’s a dangerous trend – more and more people are accepting the challenge, jumping into icy lakes.

“It just shows you how fragile human life is. That you gotta be careful,” Colley’s friend Steven Smith said.

“When you’re swimming you should always use the buddy system,” local resident Mike Bokenewicz said.

They say the water is still too cold and dangerous for swimming.

Authorities say the tragedy should serve as a warning.

Colley’s friends said they are not sure why he decided to participate or why he was at the lake by himself.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
