Man Open Fires On Two Police Stations In Washington

MARYSVILLE, Wash. – An armed man opened fire on police stations and patrol cars in three Snohomish County cities Wednesday night, triggering a response that ended with the suspect in custody and one officer injured in a related car crash.

The bizarre series of events began around 9:30 p.m. when police reported shots being fired at an unmanned patrol car in Granite Falls, according to the Snohomish County sheriff’s office.

A short time later, police in Lake Stevens reported taking gunfire at their Grade Road headquarters. Nobody was injured in either of those shootings, according to the sheriff’s office.

Not long after the shooting in Lake Stevens, deputies responded to calls about a third shooting involving a law enforcement vehicle in Marysville. Officials from the sheriff’s office reported the shooter was driving a white pickup truck with a brown bed.

In all, dispatchers report they fielded 30 separate “shots fired” calls in those three areas.

Shari Ireton with the Snohomish County sheriff’s office said the suspected shooter was taken into custody sometime after 10 p.m. in Marysville. He was injured during the arrest, but she didn’t know if he had been shot. He was taken to Providence Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Ireton later said two Marysville officers had fired shots during the incident, but it’s unclear if those shots hit anything. Neither of those two officers was hurt and they have been put on paid administrative leave as standard procedure for when officers fire their weapons.

Investigators later confirmed that several firearms were found in and near the truck driven by the suspect.

Mackenzie Harris, a 17-year-old Marysville girl, said she was outside with a friend when she saw police pull over a pickup truck. She said the pickup truck driver pulled out a gun and started shooting.

“We heard gunshots, so we ran inside,” Harris said. “While we were running up to my room, we heard, like, two dozen more shots being fired. We walked back down stairs and heard cops screaming and a bunch of yelling.”

Meanwhile, a sheriff’s sergeant was injured when his patrol car crashed into a guard rail on Interstate 5 as he was responding to the incident. It is believed, but not yet confirmed, that he may have suffered from a medical episode, Ireton said. He was treated and released at a local hospital.

Snohomish County deputies are working with Lake Stevens and Maryville Police on the investigation.
