Make It Stop!! 3 People Killed, 12 Wounded In First Shootings Of Memorial Day Weekend

Three people were killed and 12 wounded in the first shootings of Memorial Day weekend between Friday night and Saturday morning.

At 5:15 a.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot and killed after getting into an argument with two men in Jefferson Park.

At 1:30 a.m., a 15-year-old girl was shot to death and a 28-year-old man wounded while driving on Lake Shore Drive.

At 11:20 p.m. Friday, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in a car in Ashburn.

Non-fatal shootings:

• At 4:35 a.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old man was shot in Garfield Park, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was walking in the 4300 block of West West End when two men walked up to him, took out guns and fired shots at him.

The man’s forehead, arm and hand were grazed by bullets, Lemmon said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

The two men ran away.

The victim was a documented gang member, police said.

• At 4 a.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in Garfield Park, Lemmon said. The man was at a park in the 4600 block of West Jackson when someone walked up and fired shots at him.

The man was hit in his leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in good condition, Lemmon said.

The victim was also a documented gang member, police said.

• At 3:15 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot while standing outside in Back of the Yards, Lemmon said.

• At 2:55 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot while driving in Albany Park, Lemmon said.

• At 2:35 a.m., a 17-year-old was shot in North Lawndale, Lemmon said. The teen was standing outside in the 1200 block of South Independence when someone in a black SUV fired shots at him.

The teen was hit in his knee and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, Lemmon said.

• At 1:45 a.m., three people were shot in Garfield Park, Lemmon said. The three were standing outside in the 3300 block of West Walnut when a car drove by and someone inside fired shots.

A 26-year-old man was shot in his leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not released but he was listed as “stable,” Lemmon said.

A 23-year-old man was shot in his back and was in guarded condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lemmon said.

A 27-year-old man was shot in his thigh and took himself to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not released but he was listed as “stable,” Lemmon said.

The 26-year-old man and 23-year-old men were documented gang members, police said.

• At 1 a.m., two people were shot in South Deering, Lemmon said. A 50-year-old man was standing on a front porch in the 9900 block of South Paxton when two men walked up and fired shots.

The man was hit in his right forearm and refused emergency medical services, Lemmon said. A 53-year-old woman was in a bedroom and was shot in her lower back. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where her condition was not released but she was listed as “stable,” Lemmon said.

• At 9:25 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot while standing on a porch in Little Village, Lemmon said.

More officers are patrolling parks and beaches this weekend as violence is expected to spike. Memorial Day weekend was the most violent period of the month in May 2015, with 56 people shot between that Thursday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

UPDATE: As of late Sunday morning, the numbers have risen to 4 dead and 40 people shot so far this Memorial Day weekend.
