Bay Area rap veteran The Jacka died Monday (Feb. 2), in a shooting in Oakland, Calif., reports CBS San Francisco. He was just 37 years old.

Details are still sketchy, but sources say he was shot in the head sometime Monday evening on MacArthur Blvd.

Police are currently investigating, but there were no suspects, as of press time.

Jacka (real name: Dominic Newton) began his career in the late 1990s with the legendary Bay Area group, Mob Figaz, formed by gangster rap pioneer C-Bo. He’d go on to chase a solo career, releasing Jacka of the Mob Figaz in 2001, which sold over 30,000 units independently.

Over the years, Jacka has released countless projects, both solo and collaborative, as well as a slew of guest appearances.  He also launched his own label, The Artist Records, where he released his latest album, Highway Robbery with Freeway.
