An 11-year-old youth football player from Evanston has been named a Pop Warner Academic All-American.

Eyan Simms, a member of the North Shore Panthers Pop Warner team composed mostly of kids from Evanston, was among the top 2 percent of the 350,000 kids who participate in Pop Warner academically, according to a letter he received from Jon Butler, Pop Warner’s director of Little Scholars.

“I am very honored and excited to be an All-American and have always pictured myself playing a sport and getting good grades in college,” said Simms, the first Evanstonian to be honored this way in the 40+-year history of the program. “This award has shown me that my dreams can come true if I continue to work hard in school.”

Simms has already been recognized by Chicagoland Pop Warner and Mid-American Pop Warner. On May 26, he will be recognized nationally at the Disney World Yacht Club in Orlando.

Simms thanked his family and the North Shore Panthers football team “for the support and time they have given me during this awesome time.”
