Cynthia Nixon Says Black Should Have The First Shot At Marijuana Licenses As A Form Of Reparations

Cynthia Nixon would give black communities the first crack at legal marijuana licenses – saying it’s a “form of reparations.”

“Now that cannabis is exploding as an industry, we have to make sure that those communities that have been harmed and devastated by marijuana arrests get the first shot at this industry,” Nixon told Forbes Saturday at the Cannabis Parade in Union Square.

“We [must] prioritize them in terms of licenses. It’s a form of reparations.”

The actress’ comments drew a rebuke from the Rev. Al Sharpton, who noted there were much larger issues at play.

“I’m for legalizing marijuana and I like Cynthia Nixon but putting pot shops in our communities is not reparations. Health care, education !!” Sharpton tweeted Monday.

The “Sex and the City” actress-turned-wannabe politico has made legalizing pot a central part of her campaign against Gov. Andrew Cuomo. She says she’s smoked pot twice but that it “wasn’t for her.”

“Arresting people – particularly people of color — for cannabis is the crown jewel in the racist war on drugs and we must pluck it down,” Nixon told the parade crowd. “We must expunge people’s records; we must get people out of prison.”

She told Forbes that marijuana was a “racial justice issue” since so many people of color are jailed on possession charges.

Minorities were 10 times more likely to be arrested for pot possession in 2017 and made up 86 percent of all marijuana arrests last year – despite white people being just as likely to use, Forbes reported.

“The use of marijuana has been effectively legal for white people for a really long time,” said Nixon. “It’s time that we legalize it for everybody else.”
