Chicago police are investigating after a 60-year-old man was found dead across the street from the Drake Hotel early Wednesday, police said.

The body was found around 5:20 a.m. in the 100 block of East Lake Shore Drive in the Gold Coast neighborhood on the Near North Side.

Michigan Avenue was closed at the 100 block of East Lake Shore Drive.

A white sheet covered the body of the man on a sidewalk at the edge of a small park across the street from the Drake Tower around 9 a.m.

A man who had been walking briefly stopped near the scene.

“Oh, my God,” he said as he put his hand on his chest.

People continued to walk their dogs near Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue. At least one bicyclist was abruptly stopped by the police tape.

A 60-year-old woman, who did not want to be identified, huddled with other residents as they tried to piece together what could have happened to the man.

She said neighbors had been working with their alderman to address concerns they’ve had about the small park. There have been instances where people have built bonfires and at other times people have found needles.

“Things have gotten better,” she said. “(But) at night we can’t go across the street to walk the dogs. It’s too dangerous.”

As workers picked up and placed the man’s body in a white van Wednesday morning, a man and a woman stopped at the edge of the crime scene.

“Well, we wanted a little excitement in Chicago,” the woman said. “I guess we got it.”

The incident snarled traffic for hours on southbound Lake Shore Drive as far north as Foster Avenue.
