Jane Byrne, Chicago’s first and only female mayor, passed away on Friday. She was 80 years old.

Kathy Byrne, the former mayor’s daughter, confirmed that her mother died around 10 a.m. Friday with her family by her side. She said her mother died peacefully, looking out over the city she loved.

The former mayor was honored by City Council and Governor Pat Quinn earlier this year with the naming of the Jane Byrne Interchange, formerly the Circle Interchange. Kathy Byrne said the honor held great meaning for her mother.

“It was uncanny that the honors all happened this year,” Byrne said.
