A West Garfield Park woman stabbed her boyfriend to death following a dispute over cash she accused him of stealing from her to use in a card game, prosecutors said today.

Crystal “Cocoa” Caffey, 27, was ordered held today in lieu of $750,000 bail in the stabbing of Marvin “Pootie” Turner, 29, who was attacked early Monday in an apartment upstairs from where the couple lived with their five children in the 4000 block of West Maypole Avenue.

Caffey, Turner, and their children lived in a basement apartment with two roommates in a building where Caffey’s sister lives in an adjoining first-floor apartment with her boyfriend and a male roommate, whose girlfriend often stays there, according to Assistant state’s attorney Robert Mack.

Early Monday, Caffey, Turner and four other adults who live in the apartments played cards in the first-floor apartment, prosecutors said. Caffey went downstairs to bed before the others, and after a while, Turner went downstairs, woke her up and asked to borrow money.

Caffey went back to sleep, then awoke again later to find some cash was missing, prosecutors said. The card game had ended by the time Caffey woke up, and the others had gone into their bedrooms.

Caffey went upstairs to find Turner and confronted him, and they started arguing and fighting, prosecutors said. Turner grabbed Caffey by the hair, and Caffey grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Turner once in the upper left chest.

Two of the people in the apartment came out of their bedroom after hearing the fight, and found Turner had been stabbed. They called 911 about 2:50 a.m., and police and paramedics arrived to find Turner stabbed.

Police found the knife in the kitchen sink, where Caffey had left it after the stabbing, prosecutors said.

Turner was pronounced dead about 3:45 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital.

His death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Caffey was questioned by investigators and told them a different story from what she had told the people in the apartment after the stabbing. When investigators confronted her about the discrepancies, she admitted she stabbed Martin during a dispute, prosecutors said.

A family member this week said Turner has been attacked by Caffey in the past. Caffey previously was convicted of misdemeanor battery in separate cases in 2011 and 2010, and had an order of protection lodged against her in Cook County Domestic Violence Court that was allowed to expire in 2013, according to prosecutors and court records. In 2005, she was convicted of misdemeanor assault and resisting arrest.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil set Caffey’s next court date for May 19.
