There are so many talented women in Chicago and we had the chance to EarHustle with the one and only Mahogany Marie. She is a talented woman that has her own unique sound and is new to the Chicago music scene. Mahogany just released a video for her single “UnBroken” and on the verge  of becoming one of Chicago’s Movers and Shakers.

  • EarHustle411 is all about recognizing movers and shakers in Chicago, Can you share with our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Mahogany Marie. I am an independent recording artist/performer.

  • We are all born with a talent, what is your God given talent?

I believe my God given talent is to be an overall great performer. Coming from a musical theatre back ground, God has blessed me with writing singing, acting and dancing capabilities.

  • Do you have any formal training?

I don’t have formal training in musical theatre, or performing in general but I have been in many stage productions, and performed in many shows. I do take professional voice lessons every week to sharpen my craft.

  • Chicago scene seems like its missing good female artist, what are you bringing to the table to change that?

I feel I am bringing Chicago a fresh, face and fresh sound. At times my lack of formal training has led me to take risks with my image and music alike. I have been rewarded for simply being myself as a performer. I feel very blessed to be able to express myself in this manner and still represent my city at the same time.

  • What is the most difficult part in being in the music industry?

The barriers. It seems that if you are not born into the industry, you have to go through extreme lengths to get recognized. Pure talent is not a necessity anymore. This makes the playing field even more difficult for anyone being able to make a living off artistry.

  • How would you classify your music?

Acid Pop soul. I have elements of almost every genre in my songs and I try to make each word I write powerful yet catchy. The songs are strong , diverse and engaging but still infuse a powerful voice that is familiar yet different.

  • What advice would you give to other young ladies that are trying to break into the music industry?

In today’s game young ladies MUST get business savvy. Your business skills almost trump whatever real talent you may possess. No one will fight for your dream more than YOU. Remember that and implement in your respective goals.

  • Who are some of your music influences and why?

Prince, Lady Ga Ga, and Janelle Monae because they respectively changed the entire music game simply by being themselves. I also like the fact that they lived the notion of “big things comes in small packages” .

  • In Chicago, violence have been a huge focus nationwide, do you volunteer or know of any great programs to share with our readers?

Hip Hop Detoxx is an organization that supports our youth in Chicago. I will always support this organization b/c they have shown through action that helping Chicago’s youth is our priority.

  • What can we expect from you in the future?

My album is due to drop sometime in January. In the mean team be on the lookout for “Marie’s Chronicles” and lots more funky video representations of my music acting and dancing capabilities.

  • If anyone wants to check out your music, go to any of your shows, how can you be contacted?
