A Chicago man was dragged by a semi for about three miles before he was discovered by the truck driver in Northlake, authorities said.

Carmello Anzalone, 89, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 1200 block of Garnet Drive in Northlake at 7:29 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Investigators believe Anzalone was lying in the road when he was struck by the semi near Mannheim Road and Armitage avenues, said Northlake Police Chief Dennis Koletsos.

His body was then dragged north on Mannheim Road and west on Grand Avenue to Garnet Drive into an industrial area where the driver was scheduled to make a delivery, Koletsos said.

The driver pulled up near a warehouse and got out and saw the 89-year-old’s body underneath the truck, his clothing caught on something, the chief said.

The 45-year-old driver has not been cited, Koletsos said, calling the incident a “truly tragic set of circumstances.”

Investigators were awaiting the findings of the medical examiner’s office following an autopsy scheduled for today for Anzalone to see if he suffered a heart attack or died from some other cause before the truck hit him.

Anzalone’s address was listed in the 2300 block of North Normandy Avenue in Chicago.
