An 18-year-old girl has admitted to faking her own kidnapping and gang-rape, just two weeks after she went missing and then bizarrely showed up at a church bloodied and barely clothed.
Denison, Texas Police released a statement on Wednesday, saying that Breana Harmon Talbott had confessed to officers that the whole ordeal was a hoax.
She has since been arrested and charged with making a false report to a peace officer, a misdemeanor.
Police became involved with Talbott on March 8, when her fiancé called police around 5:30pm to report her missing.
He told officers that he found his girlfriend’s car abandoned in an apartment parking lot with the driver’s door open and her phone, keys and a shoe nearby.
Police then mounted a search effort, believing that Talbott had been abducted.
But later that evening, Talbott showed up at a local church. She was bloodied and wearing just a shirt, bra and underwear and claimed to have been gang raped.
She later told police that she was abducted by ‘three black males’ in ski masks at her apartment before they took her to the woods near the church and took turns raping her while one of them held her down.
Within just a few days of the incident though, detectives say that Talbott’s story started to fall apart.
One of the biggest holes in the story was the fact that medical professionals who examined Talbott at the hospital were unable to find evidence she was sexually assaulted.
Officers also combed the alleged crime scenes and didn’t find anything backing up the crime.
‘We believe the crime scene – from the initial “kidnapping” scene at the apartment complex to the point of Talbott’s condition when she walked into the church – were staged,’ Police Chief Jay Burch said.
On Tuesday, Talbott copped to police that she staged the hoax and that her wounds were self-inflicted.
The following day, she was arrested and charged with making a false report to a peace officer.
