The woman answered a knock on the door and looked down at a 2-year-old girl who lived across the hall. Could she have some food, she asked.

The woman gave her some cereal, then decided to check on the girl’s two sisters, a baby and a 6-year-old. She entered the apartment in the 3700 block of West 13th Street but couldn’t find the mother. Then she noticed the baby, 7-month-old Lamya Hampton, strapped into a car seat on a top bunk bed and wrapped in a snowsuit and blanket, according to the police report.

The baby appeared to be dead.

The woman told police she rushed out and reached another neighbor and they called 911. The baby was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:06 p.m. Wednesday, according to the police report. The other girls were also taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Less than half an hour later, the baby’s 25-year-old mother was stopped in a Jeep Cherokee about two blocks away and taken into custody.  Police said they are seeking child abandonment and endangerment charges.

“The arrestee left the victims unattended,” the police report states. “Said actions caused the death of (Lamya Hampton) and endangered the lives and well-being” of her sisters.

As detectives went in and out of the red brick apartment building, neighbors gathered in shock.
