Two Joliet residents — one of them a high school student — are each being held on $1 million bail in connection with a fatal shooting Sunday, authorities said.

Davia Mayes, 21, and Demond Fuqua, 16, each are charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm. Fuqua, who was arrested Thursday at Joliet Central High School, will be tried as an adult, police and prosecutors said.

Will County prosecutors Friday said the men are responsible for the death of Terion Steward, 31, who was walking on McDonough Street near Joliet Street when he was shot. Steward’s 15-year-old brother also was shot in the foot.

Al Roechner, Joliet’s deputy police chief, said Steward’s brother told police the two were walking when a dark vehicle drove by and a person in the rear passenger side began shooting at them.

Detectives were able to find the vehicle, registered to Mayes’ mother, on Wednesday, Roechner said. Mayes was questioned by police, who developed other information leading to Fuqua’s arrest Thursday.

Steward is the fifth victim of gun violence in Joliet since Thanksgiving. Police continue to investigate the other shootings — including one on Thanksgiving Day. Roechner said Sunday’s shooting remains under investigation.

Mayes and Fuqua will appear in court Jan. 9.
